THE STORY:

Sisters For Afghan Girls wrote -

In 2012 our sister Katie returned from a year of military service in Afghanistan where she had the opportunity to work with an incredible organization called Women for Afghan Women. During a tour of a Women for Afghan Women children’s shelter in Kabul, Katie met a young girl named Laila. She learned that Laila was sold into human trafficking at about the age of 7 by her mother and was finally rescued when she was 9 or 10. She was passed from shelter to shelter until Women for Afghan Women took her in during 2010. Manizha Naderi, the executive director of Women for Afghan Women, won a legal custody battle for Laila, so the organization now has legal guardianship of her.

Laila was 14 years old at the time, smart and motivated, and desperately wanted to go to school. With no family, and her life in danger, there was no way to get her an education. We knew we wanted to help, we knew we had to get her out of Afghanistan. In 2012 we started the Sisters for Afghan Girls Project in support of Laila and of Women for Afghan Women.

We worked closely with Women for Afghan Women to raise money and to find her a place in a boarding school or with a family in the United States where she could learn, grow, and thrive. She was accepted into some incredible private boarding schools in the US, offered a place with several families who wanted to take her in, and received an overwhelming outpouring of support from some amazing people who wanted to help her. Unfortunately, in 2013 and 2014, Laila was denied a student visa from the US Embassy in Kabul.

We all refused to give up, and so did Laila. In 2014, Women for Afghan Women found Laila an incredible home and opportunity the Kodaikanal International School in the beautiful Palani hills of India. Laila has truly blossomed over the past two years. During her first year she was recognized as a standout among the ESL (English as a Second Language) students. Over the summer, she returned to Kabul to work in the Women for Afghan Women shelters to encourage and help other women. This school year has proven to be a bit more challenging academically, but Laila continues to study and work hard...her passion and commitment are truly inspiring.

We are committed to Laila — to her education, to her welfare, and to being the sisters that she needs....and right now, WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Laila still has a few semesters left in school, and though the school has been able to offer some small financial aid, there is still tuition money left to be paid. We are asking friends and family to help us to help Laila get to the finish line. Even just $20 will go a long way to getting to our goal of $10,000 by Thanksgiving to cover Laila's tuition and expenses...anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated!

Please e-mail us if you have any questions (kranzsisters@gmail.com) and if you'd like more information on the incredible work of Women for Afghan Women, please visit womenforafghanwomen.org.

Thank you so much for your support, we love you all!
