THE STORY:

America SCORES Bay Area is a multi-year after-school program for disadvantaged urban children of various academic levels in grades first through sixth. SCORES impacts academic reading and writing proficiency while promoting health, creative expression, and the development of social skills.

SCORES student-athletes aspire to be smart, active, courageous, and caring. SCORES values include teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment, and leadership.

Evaluations show that SCORES provides experiences that address critical mental and physical health needs of low-income students. The program creates a sense of belonging that motivates school attendance and increases confidence. As a result of the program, children become active learners and empathetic teammates. They develop attitudes, behaviors, and skills necessary for achievement.

SCORES is run in partnership with urban school districts and other service providers and the programs take place at school-site facilities. To play on the SCORES’ soccer teams, students must also participate in the writing and service-learning activities. In the Bay Area, SCORES operates in more than two-dozen locations and involves nearly 900 student-athletes in programming that runs four to six days per week during the school year. On average, each child receives 150 hours of enrichment per school year.

Founded in 2001 as an affiliate of a national organization, the Bay Area operation is now working in the most underserved regions of San Francisco, Oakland, and West Contra Costa County. The annual operating budget for America SCORES Bay Area is $800,000. This amount supports twelve core staff members including five full-time Americorp volunteers. Over 60 soccer and writing coaches deliver the daily program, and dozens of volunteers help out on Saturdays for our weekly Community Game Days and other season-ending special events like the Poetry Slam and Soccer Jamboree.

Recently, America SCORES received special mention in the May 2010 White House Task Force Report entitled “Solving the Problem of Childhood Obesity.” As part of this comprehensive action plan, an evaluation study that America SCORES Bay Area conducted in partnership with the UCSF Department of Pediatrics was highlighted:

Soccer as a Building Block for Learning: America SCORES is an after-school program that combines soccer, creative writing, and service-learning. A pilot study of the America SCORES Bay Area in San Francisco showed that participants in the program had statistically significant lowering of BMI. An unpublished national evaluation also showed that participants had an increased level of physical activity, increased reporting of feelings of self-confidence, self-efficacy, and enjoyment in learning, increased reporting of reading enjoyment and longer time reading independently, and gains in writing achievement."

In 2011, we aspire to deepen our impact and expand programs. We are currently working with researches at UCSF in the areas of physical health and wellness. UCSF recently funded a new pilot program “Hip Hop for Health” that address issues of conflict resolution and violence – the leading cause of death in many of the neighborhoods served by SCORES. We continue to develop programs that build fundamental social and academic skills. We are looking into adding a financial literacy component as well as the possibility of seeding college investment accounts starting as early as the first grade.
