BENEFITING: WELLNESS COUNCIL FOR COASTAL SOUTH CAROLINA
The statistics are staggering. The rising level of obesity in this country has reached epidemic proportions. The number of children developing Type 2 diabetes due to obesity is astounding. This is a problem that can be prevented. This CAN be solved. If the children are our future, what kind of future are we headed for with sick, overweight children? Scary thought isn’t it?
In 2007, South Carolina was ranked the 5th heaviest state in America. Nearly one third of middle school students in South Carolina are overweight or obese. Approximately one half of all African American children in rural areas of South Carolina are overweight or obese.
Yet, rather than working to reduce and prevent the problem, the local school systems have chosen to reduce the amount of physical education during a student’s school career. This truly doesn’t make sense.
The Wellness Council for SC is working to change this. We have proposed to conduct a research study in a local elementary school that would do just that. Not only are we looking to get kids more physically active for better health, but we want to show that vigorous activity can actually make better students.
In order to conduct such a study, The Wellness Council for SC needs urgent funding. The study is set to begin in mid-August at the beginning of the school year, but the equipment must be purchased and consultants/experts must be paid.
Please help The Wellness Council for SC make a difference in the SC School system by bringing BACK P.E.!!!
We need to get these kids moving again so they can have a brighter, healthier future.
