THE STORY:

Help us to encourage knowledge for young junior high school students in Bangladesh! The library project hopes to raise funds for providing all amenities for a fully-functional library - books, furniture and other services.

Our mission is to provide free community access to an educational institution and to encourage education and learning in Bangladesh.

The library will be conjoined with The Principle Mohammad Hossain and Mosammat Khatun Junior High School in Goalpara Bazar, Bangladesh. The school has been open since January 9, 2008. Founded by a hard-working immigrant from New York City, it caters to students from grades 6-10. The school is located centrally between five surrounding villages. Since inception, many children, especially young girls, who did not have access to any nearby schools, are able to enroll and strive towards a better, brighter future.

Recently, the school Founder has started building the public library, next to the school, with his own funds but has been having financial difficulties in continuation. We want to help the construction of the library as well as provide the neccessary items needed for it to become functional.

Here is a breakdown of costs:

  • 80,000 TK (1,000 USD) - Books (on average, a book costs ~400tk so with this amount -- we hope to buy approximately 200 books total)
  • 120,000 TK (1,500 USD) - Structure (rooftop, floors, painting + construction costs)
  • 80,000 TK (1,000 USD) - Furniture (bookshelves, chairs, reading tables, newspaper stand)

TOTAL COST: $3,500

The library will provide a remarkable chance for many village students to excel in their studies and look forward to being positive agents of change in their society through reading.

Unfortunately, the concept of 'free education' is not prevalent in Bangladesh and consequently, many kids cannot afford to be educated. With a public library that will be open to all, both students and adults from the community will have the chance to begin the learning process.

This grassroots project is initiated by youth from the Bangladesh-American diaspora community in New York City. We hope you will be very generous in helping to make our vision come true.

Join us in making history for the children of Bangladesh today.

***ADDITIONALLY: ALL DONOR NAMES WILL BE ADDED TO A PLAQUE WHICH WILL BE DISPLAYED IN THE LIBRARY.***
