Help Byron play soccer again!!!
Organized by: Byron Brown
EVENT DATE Aug 31, 2014
I have been playing soccer competitively since I was a child and my dream is to play professionally. In 2011, I became a member of the soccer team in my freshman year at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC), and I have been on scholarship for the past 2 years. I started my summer break with great hope for returning to UDC for my senior year, last season of soccer, and graduation.
Unfortunately, on June 1st while playing soccer with friends near my home, I injured my right knee. I went to the emergency room at Holy Cross Hospital where X-rays were ok. But weeks later the MRI showed bone bruises and tears to the meniscus and ACL of my right knee. Redskins quarterback RG III had a similar injury, but mine is not as severe as his. Surgery is the recommended treatment if I ever want to play soccer again.
I expected that my insurance with United Health Care (UHC) would cover my medical bills, but I was told that my type of coverage has a $10,000 deductible, which was never explained to me. I am now learning the hard way what this deductible means. I have to pay the first $10,000 of any medical bills, and UHC will pay 80% of the next $15,000. This is devastating news to me because I have been making monthly payments to UHC for the past year since I purchased the insurance online.
My surgery is set for July 25th at Suburban Hospital. I know I will be in skilled hands because my doctor is Dr. James Gilbert, the head physician for DC United soccer team. Thankfully, Dr. Gilbert agreed to do the surgery with a down payment of $1,000 that my Aunt Jeanett gave me. I know, though, that after the surgery, the bills will be pouring in. Even with the small savings from my summer job, I can't put a dent in these medical costs to meet the deductible. That's why I desperately need your financial help over the next 30 days.
After surgery, my recuperation is expected to be 4-6 months. This means I am definitely missing my senior year of soccer at UDC, but i will complete my course work and graduate. If my recuperation goes well, I will probably be able to attend Major League soccer "scouting combine" in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in January 2015 and get the opportunity to showcase my skills to scouts, general managers and coaches. This is one path to get selected to the MLS superdraft.
So, as you can see I really need your help to pay for my surgery and keep my dream alive.
No donation is too small !!!!! Every little bit helps.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
