Help Carl Tatman

THE STORY:

I am a manager at a small company in Ohio. The company is owned by a very nice couple named Carl and Erica Tatman. Erica is a Dental Hygienist and Carl is a retired Police Officer. They opened the company in 2007 for Carl to work as Director of Operations. He was doing well in the position until 2012 when his health condition took a turn for the worse.
When it comes to health issues, Carl is by far the unluckiest person that I have ever met. He was forced to retire early from the Police Department after suffering his second heart attack at the age of 28. He has also survived colon cancer, skin cancer, and triple bypass surgery. And on top of all of that, he is also diabetic, which is the reason for his current problems.
Through the fall and winter of 2011, the symptoms from his diabetes started to get much worse. He was getting very lethargic and irritable. A couple of times he got so bad that he passed out and medics had to be called to the office to revive him. It was in early 2012 that he got the news that his diabetes had advanced to Kidney failure. He had to quit working and begin daily dialysis treatments while he was placed on a waiting list for a Kidney transplant.
Unfortunately, he did not get to stay on the waiting list for very long. It wasn’t long until he developed Calciphylaxis, which is a syndrome of vascular calcification, thrombosis and skin necrosis. It is seen almost exclusively in patients with Stage 5 chronic kidney disease. It results in chronic non-healing wounds and is usually fatal. His transplant status was placed on hold because he was no longer able to heal properly. This has lead to a series of amputations. First it was part of his right middle finger and a couple of toes on his right foot. Then, when his foot didn’t heal, it was the rest of the toes and part of the foot. His bad luck continued this spring when he had a misstep coming off of his front porch and broke 5 bones in his left foot and ankle. The breaks required surgery to insert pins and plates, but the surgical incisions never healed and soon it was another amputation, this time just below the knee of his left leg. Since this wound has not healed either, he is now being scheduled for another surgery to remove more of his left leg.
As Carl’s health was failing, so to were the fortunes of the business. Stiff competition, accompanied by a couple of sleazy characters who ran up huge bills and never paid, have left our company on the verge of bankruptcy. It won’t be long until we are forced to close our doors for good. And if it was only the business that was going to be lost the situation wouldn’t be so bad. You see, when Carl and Erica started this business they took out a large loan and used Carl’s family farm, where his mother and grandmother still live, as collateral for the loan. So, when the company does go under, the bank will foreclose on the farm and his mother and grandmother will lose their home. This fact is weighing on Carl almost as heavily as the prospect of more amputations.
Carl has been through a lot in his short life. He is only 45. He has also given a lot to the community. He has coached Biddy Basketball, coached Kiwanis baseball, was in the high school Athletic boosters, taught Bible Study at church, and was a 4-H advisor. He also served as President of the local F.O.P. chapter, and he served on the city council, both as a councilman and as President. This is why we want to give something back to him, and since we can’t do anything about his health problems, we want to try to at least give him a little peace of mind while he battles to survive.
Our goal is to raise $175,000 to pay the loan on the farm so Carl does not spend his remaining days feeling guilty for costing his mother and grandmother their home. Any additional money raised will go towards Carl’s medical expenses. Please help ease this man’s soul.
