BENEFITING: GETTING OUT AND STAYING OUT INC
Getting Out & Staying Out (GOSO) supports the re-entry of formerly incarcerated young men who are coming out of NY Corrections Facilities (mostly Rikers Island).
I completed my first year graduate/direct practice internship at GOSO in 2011. The experience changed my life - it made me more aware and informed of the complex issues surrounding incarceration. Also, the insight gained through my GOSO internship made me a stronger believer of second chances, as more often than not, circumstances - not character - lead to a series of trying events that pave the way for incarceration.
I received an e-mail from Crowdrise, a cool do-it-yourself fundraising site, encouraging me to raise funds as a way to celebrate my birthday. I thought this was a neat idea and could be my small way to give back to GOSO.
My goal is to raise a modest $310. This amount buys 10 new weekly unlimited Metro pass that GOSO could provide to its clients. Subway passes are a major expense for the organization (when I interned, about ~$50,000/year) that critically aids clients' re-entry activities (e.g., travelling to school, going to job interviews). So, please support this small fund raising initiative and help out my favorite non-profit, GOSO.
