Help creativity and sanity in a disable persons life.
Organized by: Carl Wayne
I wish to maintain a creative spirit and mental sharpness in my life thru continued piano learning and mentoring. Hi, my name is Carl Wayne and I'm an older disabled adult and am in need of a replacement piano to continue learning and mentoring piano to other older adult piano students. My digital piano gave out on me and I don't have the funds to replace it, as I have been living on disability the last 10 years. I was a working person as a help desk supervisor and one day my heart just gave out on me and I became totally dependent on a pacemaker to make my heart beat. Overnight my income was slashed by 60% and I had my every day bills and medical bills to pay which depleted what savings I had. I lost just about everything. I lost my friends because I couldn't do the same activity and things we all used to to. I couldn't work and with no income to cover bills social life just wasn't there. There is nothing like a disability to show you the mistakes you have made in your life. I was angry, depressed, my pride wouldn't let anybody in. I was a happy book cover with burnt empty pages inside. What helped me out of my funk was the desire to become a learner and feed the creativeness that was buried deep inside me. When I was very young I took piano lessons and I didn't learn so well but what I remembered was that I could get lost in the music. See I didn't want to play classical I wanted to play the Entertainer but couldn't that wan't allowed in my home. So when I got the chance to quit I did. My disability brought me back to the piano and really saved my life. I was able to buy a modest digital piano and started learning from the beginning the things I didn't as a child, eventually others walking by my apartment would hear me and ask if I taught. This brought me out of my shell, I began opening up to the outside world and began helping other older adults with their piano studies and this bring me to why I'm here and seeking help. My digital piano quite working and it is too expensive to repair. So, now I have nothing to practice on. I'm seeking funds to purchase a decent acoustic piano ether used or new, have it delivered to my apartment and have it tuned to continue my lessons and mentoring. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and there are a lot of good used pianos and i'm hoping to get a 5 or 6 foot baby grand. I'm hoping to extend my mentoring to others through my own progress in music and how we can pull ourselves up by opening up and sharing our triumphs over adversity. Thank you very much
