THE STORY:

Hello All, I have been fighting for my right to be with my kids for about 3 years now. I haven't been as successful as I had hoped, and this is mainly due to my inability to afford a lawyer. At this point in time, the State is threatening to suspend my Driver’s License, and will not work with me at all. It isn't that I am not paying my child support—that is already garnished from my wages. But between that, the daycare bills, the children’s medical bills, and my cost of living, I am left with very little. Most months I have to skip certain bills in order to feed the kids, or to afford gas to drive to work every day. Due to my missed payments to the Daycare, I am in arrears, thus the reason for my impending suspended license. I can’t help but feel that losing my license would be the first step towards losing my kids forever. As one lawyer explained, “The way the system is designed, they chip away at the man until he loses just enough to make him an undesirable father to the courts.” I love my kids, and have worked hard to keep them in my life; I do not want to lose them now. The story of my battle for my kids has been a long one; but it is a battle I am losing. Currently, the options I have been given are: 1.) Stay the course, lose my license, and hope that everything works out for the best. OR 2.) Get a lawyer and fight it. This brings me to my last ditch effort: Asking for help from everyone and anyone. I am not a man that likes to ask for help, or to lean on others...but this is for my kids. They need me, and I need them. My Goals: 1.) I currently see them 10 days a month, I would like to get this up to 15 days—making it 50% visitation. I feel this is reasonable since I have done nothing to deserve not seeing them half the time. I was one of the halves that made them so I should be able to see them half of the time. 2.) I would like to adjust the Child Support so that I am able to live and be the father they deserve. I want to be able to afford a life with them and live without the constant stress of how I am going to make ends meet—or afford to pack their school lunches each day. 3.) If it comes down to it, I would like to be able to get a Guardian Ad Litem so that the kids could have someone to talk to and see if it were better for them to live with me instead of their mother. Sadly, in Washington State, the father is automatically assumed to be a deadbeat, and a Guardian Ad Litem would be able to get me excluded from that stigma. I am hoping that I can achieve this goal so that I can stay in my kids’ lives and be the father they need. Thank you for your time, and your help. Dan Bocook
