My project is a fundraiser and support group to help me run in the ING New York City Marathon as well as to raise funds to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) .
It is a personal cause for me as I have been diabetic since I was 5 years old, so being able to support JDRF is beyond rewarding. This site was created not just as a way to collect donations, but as a way of keeping in touch with those who support my efforts from a charity standpoint. You can also as tracking my training. Money will not be the only deciding factor that allows me to accomplish the 42.5 kilometer race through New York City.
I have created a Facebook group that will serve as a way of updating how my fitness and charity goals are progressing. There will be several fundraising projects at school and on the homefront to generate funds and support for the upcoming marathon on November 6th. More updates on my training and fund raising projects are to come.
Thanks again for your support! I believe that through my hard work and dedication to this cause, we can get closer towards finding a cure for juvenile diabetes.

Information about me
My name is Drew Bechtel; I was born in Toronto, and raised in Kingston Ontario. I am a 4th year university student at Western Ontario majoring in Social Justice and Peace Studies and minoring in Sociology.
I am an avid fan of being fit as well as promoting fitness. Along with having a strong interest in being involved in social service work with communities in need, I also am looking to take my passion of fitness further and do personal training. I have been active in sports ever since childhood. As a relatively small kid, I have learned the benefits of living healthy not only result in a better body, but a better attitude, a better outlook, and a better life. Whether it be fitness, work, or interpersonal, I hope to be able to make postive changes in people's lives.
I am an avid music fan that enjoys almost all types of music. My favourite aritsts are Matthew Good, The Tragically Hip, Talib Kweli, Doobie Brothers, RJD2, and Dead Mau5.
I am not a huge movie watcher, but my favourites are Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Fight Club and Office Space.
Why you should consider my cause
I am strongly connected with the charity that I am fundraising for during the NYC Marathon (JDRF International), as I am a juvenile diabetic myself. Although I consider myself to be a very healthy diabetic and overall person, I have had my own struggles with the condition, as well as setbacks from which I have learned. Through these setbacks, I have learned that like what is said in the movie The Princess Bride "If you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything". I have learned that diabetes is a condition that dosen't have to hold you back, but it is something that you have to constantly be aware of; it is part of daily life. That is why I hold myself accountable to not only taking the very best care of myself from a health and fitness standpoint, but also doing the best I can in training and performing for events like the upcoming NYC Marathon.
I have been fortunate to have a family that understands my condition well, and a team of diabetic specialists in Kingston and London, Ontario that I can rely on. Significant advancements have taken place in diabetic treatment and research in my lifetime. Although I take good care of myself, it has become much easier to do so with these advancements. This is why donating to JDRF and funding diabetic research is so crucial. There is nothing anyone can do to prevent juvenile diabetes, but it is easier than ever to be healthy, happy and live a normal life as a diabetic. This would not be possible without continuous generous donations made towards treating and finding a cure for juvenile diabetes.
The final reason you should support my cause is this: I strongly believe that I can be a positive example of how to overcome many of the difficulties of diabetes while still achieving goals in fitness and daily life. This will be my third marathon. I have had a scary period of time with complications from diabetes and missed half a year of school, but I have come back from that setback and run two full marathons and one half marathon. I remain totally commited to my cause of being healthy and running the best marathon I can, but I also remain commited to raising awarness so that others can get the support that they need to be the best diabetics they can be.
I will do the best I can to be a role model for others and maintain a healthy mind and body.
