BENEFITING: SASSE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION INC
In Cameroon, Africa, students have to pay for high school education. Unfortunately, many families cannot afford the high cost of secondary education ( high school). They are left with the tough decision that no parent should have to make – Can I afford to send my son to school or should he stay home so I can feed my family? Dr. Bertrand Fote, our alumni association Vice President and fundraising committee chair is just one of many alumni who have been in this situation as a student. "My parents faced this dilemma when I was in high school at st. Joseph's College, Sasse, Cameroon, after their bank went defunt. There is no FDIC in Cameroon so they lost their life savings." So many students are unable to complete their secondary education because of financial hardship.
Over the past few years, we have been able to give scholarships to a handful of students annually. Over 85% of the students who have received scholarships have gone on to University. Most have graduated and joined the work force, becoming productive members of society. Dr. Bertrand Fote, a recipient of a similar alumni scholarship 24 years ago is a living example of the impact these scholarships can have on the lilves of these kids. He gives this testimony -"When I see so many kids drop out of HIGH SCHOOL because of financial hardship, I think of what could have happened to me if God did not send that intervention with that Professor Victor Anomah Ngu scholarship on May 10,1991. When I see kids with so much promise who lack motivation and eventually fall by the wayside, I think of what could have happened to me if that recognition and award did not give me a role model to look up to and emulate. I don't think I would be practicing emergency medicine today if not of that life-changing moment. That is why I am so committed to helping these kids in my alma mater. That is why my heart bleeds for these kids...and I know yours bleeds too. That is why Laura and I have already donated $5,000 to this cause and are pledging more. I don't know where I would be today without that timely intervention in my life."
Unfortunately, our limited resources do not allow us to wipe the tears of many other students who are forced to drop out of school because of financial need. Students, who drop out, some of who are orphan kids, have faced a downward spiral in their lives. Their families, who invested in them, continue to face significant economic hardship. Our hearts are broken by this, and our alumni association in July 2015 made a commitment to be a blessing to every student in need who shows promise by creating this Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Sasse Alumni Association is an association of our high school alumni residing in the USA and Canada. We share bond - we were privileged to get top class secondary and high school education at St. Joseph's College, Sasse in Cameroon, West Africa.
The goal of this campaign is to raise $250,000 by December 30th, 2019 to create and establish a Scholarship Endowment Fund which will be used to provide annual scholarships to as many as 50 students. Your gift will work miracles. It will allow our alumni association to create a scholarship endowment fund. This fund will generate interest that will be used to sponsor over 50 annual scholarships forever without touching the principal. YOU can help make a difference in the lives of over 50 children every year for generations with your single gift of $100 or more today. We will also be able to use the funds to fund exchange study programs between St. Joseph’s College Sasse and US schools. Setting up an exchange program will give students in the US to experience the rich culture that Cameroon offers, and vice versa.
