BENEFITING: The Empowerment Plan
Help The Empowerment Plan in our mission to create jobs, educate, instil pride and help those on the street that need it now.
Over 20,000 homeless Detroiters bear the frigid Michigan winter each day and each night. That means 1 in every 42 people in the city don't have access to a basic necessity: warmth. Unfortunately many local good-intentioned organizations are overwhelmed and under-funded, and ultimately are not able to accommodate the staggering number of homeless men, women and children living in the cold.
We employ and train homeless mothers to manufacture a garment that serves as both a coat and a sleeping bag. This garment is self-heated and water resistant and transforms from a coat into a sleeping bag with a simple pull of a piece of fabric. These coats are then distributed back to the homeless individuals within their city at no cost. Through training and steady employment these women are able to elevate themselves from the cycle of poverty. Within the first few months of working with the program, we actively help these women and their families move off the streets by finding them secure, furnished housing. These women have empowered themselves with the confidence and skills necessary for a more sustainable, financially stable and healthier life.
A coat costs about $100 to make and that cost includes all of the other services we provide to our team. Anything you can contribute helps us hire more homeless mothers and get more coats out on the streets to those in need.
Thanks so much for your support!
