BENEFITING: APNE AAP INTERNATIONAL INC
EVENT DATE: Aug 31, 2012
My birthday is August 9 and I am sure you all are itching to get me nice things. The truth is - I am already blessed with all the things I need in this life: love, peave, happiness, and good health. Instead, I am requesting that each of you donate any amount towards an issue the demands urgent attention - modern-day slavery.
Slavery still exists today - it is more commmonly referred to as human trafficking, forced labor, and prostitution. Over 27 million people are enslaved in the world - the majority of them being women and girls. While this is a painful subject to consider, it is necessary that we take action against it.
Women bring a certain beauty to this world that is unmatched by anything else. The women in my life are among the smartest, kindest, funniest people I have ever encountered and they inspire me to continue fighting for fair and equal treatment for all humans. Let's work together to end sexual slavery, forced labor, and overall inhumane treatment of women and girls.
To rob a child of her innocence is one of the worst crimes against humanity. It is unthinkable that any human being can be subjected to the torture, assault, humiliation, and cruelty that is experienced by millions of young girls on a daily basis. They are removed from their homes and coerced into situations where they are exposed to drugs, prostitution, and extreme physical and emotional abuse. What message are we sending to these girls if we continue to allow these crimes to occur? Instead of being treated as the treasures that they are, these girls are drugged, beaten, and exploited so that others may gain from their demise. The number of people who are being trafficked every year continues to increase and the trafficking industry has become one of the most profitable in the world. But at what cost? How can we put a price tag on human dignity?
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Apne Aap is an organization founded by 22 former red-light district workers in India. I first heard of this agency when I read the book Half the Sky and I was truly inspired by their determination and passion to save the lives of girls and women around the world. Instead of allowing the trauma of their pasts to limit them, they have taken their pain and created this amazing organization. The vision of Apne Aap is to create a world where the value every girl and woman is acknowledged and no human being is bought or sold. They fight to keep girls protected from human trafficking and forced prostitution by enrolling them in various programs. They also support survivors in their struggle to heal from the trauma, fight legal issues, and build a new life. Read more about Apne Aap: http://apneaap.org/index.php
My goal is to raise $1000 that will go directly to their work. The efforts of Apne Aap have touched the lives of over 10,000 girls but there are still millions of others who are forced into slavery around the globe. Anything you can contribute will help Apne Aap spread the message that girls are valuable and are NOT FOR SALE. Show your appreciation for the women in your life.
