BENEFITING: SEEDS OF LEARNING
EVENT DATE: Jun 19, 2016
In mid-June, my 13-year old niece Hannah and I will be headed down to Nicaragua to work with the local community of El Tule (near the city of Matagalpa) to build two new classrooms and a school kitchen . Yes, we are excited to mix cement, dig trenches and lay bricks! We will be part of a workgroup with 8 other families and the Sonoma-based nonprofit, Seeds of Learning (SOL).
Steven and I have been involved with SOL for several years since our friends Ivan Lieben, Matt Evans and Dave Kyle have all served on their Board and often invite us to their annual live-auction and fundraising dinners. We have been impressed how much this local, grass-roots nonprofit has achieved for the children and communities in Nicaragua over the last 25 years While we have enjoyed sipping wine, bidding on fun donated items, and the action of the live auctions, I've decided to gain a better understanding of their work by joining a workgroup this summer. Although Matteo is a little too young to be of much help, I've recruited my niece, Hannah to go along with me on this summer. Some of you may remember Hannah as the flower girl who pulled Matteo around in the wagon at our wedding!
Tule is one of fastest growing communities near the urban area of Matagalpa and enrollment in the school has grown quickly. The local elementary school serves about 475 students from pre-school to 6th grade and has about 15 teachers. Currently, the students crowd into five classrooms, while other classes are held off-site at an annex in the hot afternoons. Our project will improve, rebuild and add two needed classrooms to the school. Meals for the students are cooked at the school in an improvised, open-air kitchen space. We will build a cleaner, safer and enclosed kitchen with low-wood consumption stoves and a chimney to improve cooking conditions. Finally, we will work with another partnering organization to replace the dilapidated latrines with new bathrooms. Yes folks, that is correct, there is a chance that I will be digging out a new latrine!
Please consider supporting Hannah and I as we embark on this worthy cause. Your donations to Seeds of Learning are 100% tax deductible and will go a long way towards improving the lives and education for the kids of El Tule. Your donations will go directly towards helping fund the construction of the classrooms and to purchase needed supplies, books and tech equipment. Additionally, I would be willing to take down any in-kind donations for the schools such as:
-Books in Spanish, especially story books,
- Materials for the education programs, and
- Used or new calendars (2016 or older too) and magazines for crafts.
