We are waiting on the surgeon for what we are going to do. Noah's shunt is worse than expected and they are looking at alternatives.  See more

THE STORY:

Noah needs a CT scan to save his life! Rescued from certain euthanasia Noah has beat death once, now we need your help so he can live a long, healthy, love-filled life!

Noah was born with a liver shunt. A wonderful donor has volunteered to pay for his surgical procedure as well as get him from Southern Maryland to the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. But first we need to raise the funds for the CT Scan to see if Noah is a candidate for Percutaneous Transjugular Coil Embolization. This surgery is to "...reduce the unacceptably high, peri-operative morbidity and mortality rates associated with traditional open surgical techniques and hopefully improve the outcome for these cases. Intrahepatic portosystemic shunt PTCE has been reported to have reduced peri-operative morbidity rates with similar long-term success as that reported for many open surgical procedures."  (http://www.amcny.org/node/341#Liver_Shunts)

Noah was born May 8, 2012. When he was neutered in December of 2012 he didn't respond as most healthy dogs do. In April 2013 he was referred to a specialist for an internal medicine consult. At that time he was diagnosed with a Portosystemic Shunt (liver shunt). Two days after the visit with the doctor, the family reported that Noah was doing great on his diet and medication and decided not to do any surgical intervention.

KILL SHELTER? What happened during the next month and a half, we can only guess. What we do know is that Noah's family took him to our local kill shelter around the 11 of June 2013. (We have learned that the family couldn't afford his medication and he wasn't thriving, we are in touch with them.)  The shelter tryed to get Noah adopted, even talking to his vet who told them he could live a long life as long as he was medically managed and stayed on medication. Their efforts weren't working which caused him to be put on the "need help ASAP" list.

TWO STRIKES! Noah was actually born with two strikes against him. 1) He's black and black dogs are the last to be adopted; 2) a medical issue that most people aren't willingly ready to accept into their homes.

Second Hope Rescue pulled Noah from the kill shelter on the 22nd of June 2013. We are looking for an adoptive home but the two strikes above, are still going against him. We are hoping that once his story gets out there and we can get the surgery, his "Black Dog Status" won't hinder finding him the loving forever home he desires!

All donations are tax deductible. Any amount over the amount needed will be put to use on the medical needs of some of our other fosters or if needed in the rescue of another homeless animal needing our help!

---------------------------

Second Hope Rescue, Inc., is a small all-breed, 501(c)3 dog and cat rescue. We rescue the dogs that most other groups don't seem to even notice. We don't have any bias in relation to age, breed, size, some medical issues and some behaviour issues. The dogs we rescue, represent to us, what rescue really means. Second Hope Rescue will always attempt to help our local community when they need to rehome their pets. If we can't take them into the group we will courtesy post and help find the best home, post on our Facebook page, work with other rescue groups, or send to a multitude of mailing lists with offers of help. If the family is only needing to rehome due to financial issues (i.e. vet care, food), we will arrange an appointment with our vet and pay the bill (usually out of the pockets of our board members), or we will deliver food and/or medication, whatever is needed for as long as the need is there.
