THE STORY:

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples” –Mother Teresa On the news. Scrolling through Facebook. Scrolling through Instagram In the papers. Through word of mouth. The faces and stories of Syrian refugees have flooded the internet—as they should. When the unsettling image of a dead 3-year-old boy on a Turkish beach surfaced, the crisis could no longer be ignored. Organizations, politicians, and every day citizens have sprung into action to help our fellow human beings. Refugees need help, and if we are not to give it to them, then who? The idea behind this campaign came from an honors contract. At OSU, I am in the honors college. Typically, honors students enroll in honors courses to be considered “active” in the honors college. However, if a student is not able to enroll in these courses (they are not available for every course or there may be scheduling conflicts) they may “contract” a course. Typically contracting a course involves writing a paper involving 20-25 additional hours outside of class. My business law professor is working with us and because law connects to so many areas, we have flexibility to move beyond a paper. I had originally intended to work with immigration law. Both of my parents were immigrants from Mexico. My dad came to the U.S. when he was 18 with two changes of clothing and $80. He started work as a busboy and worked various small jobs, from a ranch hand to an apple picker. There were times when his income was so low he could only afford to live in a car. With the help of farm owners, like Bob White, he was able to find a job, save, and give his kids a much easier life. Passionate about immigration, I wrote up a plan to write a paper addressing the law, but with the Syrian crisis at hand, I decided to move towards that topic. While talking with my professor, it seemed like the words were falling out of my mouth as I said I wanted to start a fundraiser for Syrian refugees along with doing a law analysis. Syrians are in desperate need of help. Any donation amount is appreciated. “The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention”.
