BENEFITING: SEA TO SHORE ALLIANCE

THE STORY:

Did you know that it takes: 1-5 years for a cigarette; 10-20 years for a plastic bag; and 600 years for monofilament fishing line to break down in the environment?

Worldwide nearly 1.4 billion pounds of trash enter the ocean each year. It is estimated that 80 % of this marine debris (persistent, solid material that is processed or manufactured and disposed of in the Great Lakes and open oceans) is land-based.

THAT MEANS MOST OF IT IS COMING FROM US!!!

Once this trash reaches our waterways and begins to decompose, it enacts terrible destruction on the environment.

Sea to Shore Alliance has seen this damage first-hand. A component of our mission, involves rescuing threatened species from marine debris and fisheries-related entanglements during our research efforts. Every marine species deserves a chance to live in a clean, healthy environment free from entanglement or ingestion threats!

Every day we make decisions that impact the health of our oceans. Marine debris is one issue we can all do something about RIGHT NOW. But we need your help! We need to educate the public, explain why marine debris is harmful, and talk about ways we can improve the health of our habitats and oceans for the future.

Sea to Shore Alliance HAS overhauled a bus into an incredible mobile classroom for our H2O: our Healthy Habitats and Oceans program. "H2O On the Go" ncludes a mini lab for plastic and debris studies, exhibits focused on currents to study how trash moves around the ocean, exhibits on the dangers of marine debris, and a flatscreen monitor for sharing educational material and videos from the field.

This Fall we started visiting Southeast Florida schools, watersport shops, coastal festivals, and community events, reaching out to those who know the ocean as their playground and inviting everyone to help with beach cleanup events along the way. However, we need your help to keep it moving!

We’re asking everyone to contribute what they can so we can literally get this project on the move. The bus is built, but now we need fuel and maintenance coverage. Plus it's really hot so we're working on a new A/C system that will keep our staff, and your family cool while they're inside learning.

Every bit counts, so please don’t be shy, and feel free to email us at kcucinotta@sea2shore.org if you have suggestions or ideas to benefit this project!
