Educating Women is not only the key to a brighter future, it is also a key to survival. Help me help the women of Nepal.  See more

THE STORY:

While teaching Sex and Culture and Globalization at the University of Idaho, I became painfully aware of the desperate need to help women around the world gain an education. I had planned to continue to work in Academia educating others of this need.

Then, the current economic crisis caused major cutbacks at UI and I lost my job. I spent some time applying for jobs and falling deeper into depression with each day. Then, I saw an article on the Edge of Seven project in Nepal. I decided that instead of feeling sorry for myself, I needed to focus on helping those who do not even have the option of an education.

My wish is to earn enough money to sponsor my trip to Nepal in January. Please help me volunteer to help others.

For more information read the following:

Seven out of every 10 girls in the Everest region of Nepal don't get to go to college because of a lack of housing for girls.

With your help, we can change that.

Edge of Seven will begin construction on a women's hostel this November in Salleri, the district capital of the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. It will house approximately 50 college-bound girls from rural areas where higher education is not available.

I'd like to introduce you to a few of the girls who want a spot in the hostel.

Pelu Lama is 19 years old. She has a father and four younger sisters. Her mother died while giving birth three years ago because the closest hospital was one day's walk from the village. She wants us to build a hostel so that she can go to college and become a nurse. She wants to save as many mothers as possible.

Amrit Karki is 17 years old and has a mom, dad, 2 younger brothers, and 4 older sisters. Her dad is a truck driver and her mom works in the fields. She wants us to build a hostel because she believes that as an educated woman, she can change the society. She is discriminated against since she is a member of the lower caste and it is her wish for her generation and beyond that universal education will replace discrimination.

Mamata Rai, 24 years old, was forced to marry after she graduated from 10th grade. She now has a husband and three children. She can't go to college because it's culturally unacceptable for her to stay in another person's home. Her husband and in-laws will not pay for her education so this hostel is her hope for the future.

Sharon, it is such an inspiration to see you turn a frustrating time in your own life into a force for good in the lives of others. I make this donation in honor of my mother who was able to provide for her children because of a solid education, and in honor of my friend Sharon who has devoted herself to helping women reach their fullest potential. I'm lucky to have such strong women in my life. 9 years ago
