For those of you who are unaware of what Chronic Lyme disease is; it is often called the "mimicker's disease". What this means is that Lyme hides inside the body, for what could be a life time, giving signs and symptoms of other diseases making it very difficult to diagnose and therefore treat. Luckily, Elise's family and devoted parents have been able to track her symptoms, find the right information and see the proper doctors to have the procedure's done to diagnose her.
Lyme is transferred most commonly by deer ticks and has over 300 strains worldwide, with 100 of those in the united states alone. Since there are a large variety of strains the symptoms list are endless. Elise has particularly been experiencing certain symptoms which include; chronic body pain all over, frequent headaches, chronic fatigue that has changed to severe insomnia, trouble with concentration, impaired immune system, vision problems, feelings of paralyzation in hands, feet, shoulders and even had moments of numbness in one whole side of her body, etc. Everyday new symptoms come up.
Lyme Disease is a multi-system inflammatory disease caused by what are called; spirochete's. It constantly changes and hides in parts of the body, causing Elise to experience severe pain or disturbances in those areas. The reason for the constant movement is unknown, but can be speculated by the disease wanting to tear the physical body down to increase survival chances of the spirochetes and keep Elise as a host.
We are learning more and more about this disease as times goes on but we all have gotten to a point where enough is enough. This campaign is specifically targeted to raise money to give Elise her healthy life back. The constant tug of war of not knowing when this chronic disease will come to an end is emotionally putting a toll of everyone involved. Dee, Elise's Mother, has been referred to a retreat in Switzerland specifically designed to help along the healing process. They have experienced Doctors that focus on these rare types of diseases and have a high success rate.
Elise is a 17 year old Waldorf school student that gets incredible grades through discipline, focus and pure love of learning in this environment. She is about to be a senior this upcoming fall and with the rate this disease is headed having a positive last year in high school is going to be very difficult to come by. The retreat is very expensive; but for good reason. Which is why we need the help and generosity of anyone who is able to contribute to giving Elise the life experience she deserves to have.
We all understand that coming up with the funds in full is setting a very high bar, we all agree that if this retreat does not happen they way we are hoping for that the money earned will continue to go towards her supplements and doctors visits. Both which are very expensive because this disease is not recognized by most insurance companies, due to the nature of how difficult it is to treat, resulting in very expensive out of pocket bills.
