Helping a Poor Community in Africa
Organized by: Adedolapo Ige
Hello friends, It feels so exciting and fulfilling that I am finally on the road to starting my non-profit “Smiles Foundation” which will focus on empowerment and educational sponsorship mainly in impoverished communities. Smiles Foundation is a non-governmental organization whose core priority is creating empowerment for the less privileged. We are also committed to ensuring that teenagers in impoverished communities gets access to quality education by sponsoring them and awarding scholarship to hardworking students who cannot afford to pay for tuition at the tertiary level. We believe in putting smiles on faces of indigent people in our communities and giving them hope for a brighter future. Our first outreach will be taking place on Saturday 5th November 2016 at Makoko Community situated in Yaba, Lagos State. Makoko community is a slum neighborhood which was initially founded as a fishing village which eventually developed as a slum as a result of population explosion. Visiting Makoko earlier during the year, I was troubled by the high rate of poverty amongst the people. According to Thisday Newspaper, the residents of Makoko have their health threatened by the dirty environment they live in. Their surrounding is filled with wastes dumped indiscriminately by residents and left to decompose and produce obnoxious odor that become harmful to humans which makes them prone to non-communicable diseases like Malaria, Respiratory Diseases and malnutrition. The money raised will be used to provide mosquito nets, free medicals, free food distribution and free clothing to members of the community. We are currently working on every necessary paperwork to fully register Smiles Foundation as a fully functional charity organization. Your donations will make a big difference. We will be more than appreciative.
