The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Gratiot & Montcalm Counties is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Our vision is that all children achieve success in life. We do this by matching at-risk children with caring, adult role-models who will help support the child through difficult times and will guide them to make good choices. Many of our children come from a single parent household, usually a mom, receive free/reduced lunch at school or have a parent in prison. These children need a cheerleader in their corner that they can depend on to keep their word, who will be there when they say they'll be there, to help them work through difficult situations at home, in school or with their friends. The children are called Littles and the adults are called Bigs. We make matches based on hobbies, interests, likes, dislikes, age preference, location and many other factors. We do this because having things in common creates a solid foundation from which to build a friendship. It takes about 12 months for the Littles to show the positive effects of having a Big in their lives. Once they have a Big, it has been shown that the children are: 71% Improvement in Academic Performance; 66% Improvement in Classroom Behavior; 74% Improvement in their Sense of Future; 90% Improvement in Self-Confidence; 66% Improvement in Avoiding Substance Abuse. There are many more stats that will show how a positive individual that cares about a child can improve the child's life. Every child is one caring adult away from being a success story.
