Helping in the Dominican Republic | Animals & Poverty
Organized by: Models of Compassion
At the end of July, founder of Models of Compassion, Destiny Sierra, founder of Hounds & Heroes, Bonnie Jill, animal activist, Kristen Renton, and philanthropist, Lauren Scott, all join forces to help the stray animals and poverty of the Dominican Republic. We will be flying over 3 veterinarians and providing them accommodations to join forces with the foundation Barriguita Llena to rescue stray animals off the streets, spay/neuter them as well as give vaccines to minimize disease, then releasing them back into the communities. We also plan to talk with the local communities, spread awareness on the problem they have with street animals and what they can do to help. We will be also working towards bringing a few lucky dogs home as fosters until we can find them forever homes!
Second, we will be working together with the foundation Food for the Hungry, visiting the villages and schools to play with the children and help with water projects. We plan to spread awareness on the current situation going on in these communities and report our knowledge to our network to hopefully bring further help in the future! We plan to raise $5,000 to cover the costs of flights and accommodations for the veterinarians, as well as cover all cost of supplies, medical tools and vaccines as these vets will be working for free. For those of you who are un-aware - the Dominican Republic has stray animals piled up on every street, roaming around diseased, reproducing, or nearly dead. The high poverty communities are extremely poor, constantly fighting to know where their next meal will come from. The way of life isn't anything we could grasp or understand until we have actually been there; which is what brought on this mission. A few months back, Bonnie and Lauren went to visit Food for the Hungry and were devastated to see how many stray animals were roaming the streets injured and how many puppies and kittens were just laying on the sides of the roads with nothing to eat. There is no system in place that helps these stray animals and the community doesn't know how to work together to save each other. We are extremely excited to make a difference for each life we encounter and excited to spread awareness to such incredible foundations that work really hard every day to create a better place for them to call home. www.barriguita.rd www.fh.org www.ModelsofCompassion.org www.HoundsandHeroes.com.
