Guias Awkinaka is a group of 'Guide Parents' of LGBTQ youth in La Paz, Bolivia to get together and through their shared experience help other afflicted parents (in early stages of acceptance, awareness and understanding) concerning their children's sexuality and the new tough challenges they face in a sometimes difficult and homophobic context of a latin-american city.
Guias Awkinaka's long term goal is to help Bolivian LGBTQ youth to experience better lives, full of dignity and respect, safe from homophobia, violence and discrimination.
Focusing on empowering and educating parents eventually helps kids staying safe from hate crimes, staying healthy reducing HIV/STIs and reducing the alarming rate of teen suicides in the community among many other socially positive benefits.
This group was conceived, designed, presented through donation of time and talent from myself and my mother who lives in La Paz. We were able to get backing and small funding from a Swedish NGO presenting the idea as a pilot program upheld by social work's standards and goals. The program met their initial goals pre-established for the funding. Yay! There has been 4 meetings and great initial buzz and momentum however it ends in November.
