Helping the mentally ill
Organized by: James Joyce
I help out / volunteer at a local state-run mental health treatment center (what used to be called insane asylum but due to political correctness is now called mental health treatment center). Recently there have been several budget cuts and the patients are the first to lose. These budget cuts have not affected certain departments, new security cameras were just installed, the entire HVAC system has been overhauled, and the electrical system has been overhauled, only the patient activity departments have lost. The hobby /craft department used to have model airplanes / boats / cars, cross stitch, looms, crochet, Ceramics, oil painting, woodworking, leather, and airbrushing, but now there are no models left and the other items are phasing out as supply materials run out, they're not buying more. The recreation department had several video game systems, exercise equipment, sports equipment, musical instruments and tons of VHS / DVD movies but it too is dying from attrition. Lastly the patient library now has a 6 month waiting list and growing for new books and CDs to purchase because the budget for your purchases has been slashed library and had to fight for grant money to afford just kindles. These three departments were the first to suffer and their losses hurt the patients tremendously. These people have almost nothing as it is and they look forward in their day to when they can visit these departments, a patient once said that the only time when he feels like a human being when he gets to create something with his hands in the hobby /craft apartment, now what is he to do? For patient privacy I can't say where the facility is and to protect myself from retaliation. I'm hoping to raise enough money to purchase and donate the supplies that the state no longer provides to buy new board games, video games, and some movies and books, to get some new basketballs, footballs, etcetera. I plan on purchasing the stuff the state no longer supplies for the patients and bringing it in to help them. My dream would be to raise $30,000 per department so I can get enough stuff for at least the next 5 to 10 years and purchase over the next few years so it doesn't get all spent at once, but any donation would be helpful. Without these things I see the patients losing out on great opportunities to develop Healthy Living skills, social skills, job skills and confidence building, these are the goals of these three departments. These poor guys have lost so much in life and suffer so many brush offs by Society already, it hurts me to see them be classified as less important than administrative Comforts and I beg you all to help me help them, in return I will try to get them to make thank you cards for each person who donates.
