BENEFITING: Halo Helping Animals Live On
Over the past few years, I have run several marathons, mainly as a personal pursuit. I am currently training for the Boston Marathon which I'll be running one month from now (on April 15, 2013). My goal is to run under 2:55. I would like to use my running as a way to bring attention to a deserving charity and I found one that has a unique appeal to me. The charity is HALO Animal Rescue in Phoenix, AZ. Over the last couple of years, I have gotten to know and love a rescue dog by the name of Sammy, and I have realized what a tremendously positive influence dogs like Sammy can have on peoples' lives (Sammy is with me in the photo).
HALO Animal Rescue takes in pets (dogs and cats) from kill shelters across Arizona and gives them a second chance to be loved and to have a normal life. HALO Animal Rescue is a no-kill shelter, which means they NEVER put down animals because they run out of room, but it does mean they are limited in terms of how many animals they can bring in. These dogs and cats have no advocates outside of HALO Animal Rescue, and the organization is constantly in need of money for beds, food, toys, vaccinations, and the myriad other costs that are incurred while caring for these animals and working to get them into foster or permanent homes. I currently am unable to adopt a dog due to constantly moving for work, and I know many other people my age have found themselves in this situation. I think this is a wonderful way to help a very deserving organization if you can't foster or volunteer. I also will match 100% of the first $200 of donations :)
As a note, Maricopa County (where Phoenix is located) has one of the largest populations of dogs and cats in shelters in the United States, with just under 100,000 entering shelters every YEAR. Please help if you can.
