BENEFITING: SALT SEEKER FOUNDATION INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2014
Aging out of institutional care means the loss of the safety net seperating teens from homelessness, disease, human trafficking, and from becoming victims of violent crimes. It is a global issue. The Salt Seeker Foundation, non-profit organization, helps several orphanages in Battambang, Cambodia. It was founded by Daravann Yi, a Community College of Phila. ESL Counselor, Author, and Khmer Rouge survior. With the knowledge of this very real danger, Yi has a long-range goal of creating a technical school for the kids of these orphanages to provide them with the skills to find jobs once they age out of the facility.
I became aware of the global reach of the aging out issue in May 2012, when I travelled to Battambang Orphanage Center 2, with a Community College of Phila. Cambodian Study Tour, co-lead by Daravann Yi. This experience lead me to volunteering to help Salt Seeker Foundation's efforts to raise funds to meet the goal set for 2014 of arranging for technical training with existing programs, for as many of the kids as possible, who will be turning 18. We will also be purchasing mosquito netting for the beds at the orphanage. This simple item can greatly reduce their health risk from Malaria. Please help us reach this years goal by making a donation.
The foundation's name comes from Yi's memoir and twenty-five percent of the book's profits directly benefit the foundation. Salt Seeker: When there is life, there is a will to survive, describes Yi's survival under the brutal Khmer Rouge Regime, from his family's relocation from Phnom Penh, deaths of family and friends, his struggles in a child labor camp, and finally, his escape, with two siblings, to a Thai refuge camp and their emmigration to the US. Since 2007, the foundation has been able to help these kids by giving toiletries, clothing, food, and medicines like tylenol and flu-medication. While this improves the quality of their lives in the short run, this is not the kind of meaningful long-term assistance that was the catalyst for founding Salt Seeker Foundation.
My son, Tristan, will be running the upcoming Angkor Wat International Half Marathon on Dec. 1, to help with the fundraising efforts (see Tristan's Run For Cambodian Orphan Education/Health). Please help us make a difference for these kids and improve their chances for a healthy future, by making a donation. Thank you.
