THE STORY:

An amazing opportunity has arisen to improve and enrich the welfare of animals from two large Vietnamese animal organisations, the Hanoi Zoo and Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Center. Zoo keepers, Shane Fox and myself have been asked to spend three months working with the people and animals to dramatically improve the welfare and livelihood of the animals and their level of care. This opportunity has only come about recently and has a short time frame to get everything finalised and actioned.

THE SITUATION

‘Animals Asia’ has combined with ‘Change for Animals Foundation’, to address the situation at both the Hanoi Zoo and Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Center (HWRC).

Hanoi Zoo is home to some 600 animals, whilst HWRC is packed with animals from the illegal animal trade. Conditions are extremely poor with animals getting minimal care and attention, living in barren enclosures with no sense of personal space or any forms of stimulation. The animals are in poor emotional and physical shape. There is a never ending list of issues that need to be addressed. A complete re-design and build of the Zoo and Rescue Center would be ideal but in reality is currently out of reach.

The issue with the Zoo, and the organisations we’d be working under, is that they have insufficient available funds. Shane and I would be working as professional volunteers, not receiving a wage. An income isn’t our priority, we are just looking for the chance to change the lives of many animals in dire need. Therefore we are reaching out for sponsorship. Any money donated would be put to use at the Hanoi Zoo and Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Center. Funding will allow us to evaluate building enclosures; source and purchase materials to enrich enclosures; build and develop enclosures and share our skills and knowledge.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to improve the husbandry practices, train the keepers, build new enclosures and re-create the interior of the existing enclosures giving the inhabitants a more enriched life. We are wanting to help turn the tide on how animals are viewed by stakeholders and visitors. Changing the way they view and treat animals will be paramount to ensuring the quality of life for current and future animals in Vietnam.

We have three months. Three months to add as much as possible to these animals lives by improving their mental and physical state. The biggest asset to the animals is our time. However on top of this we need to have the ability to obtain materials in which to develop the animals environments. Your help in funding this project would allow us to go above and beyond sharing our experience and knowledge with the people who care for these animals. It would allow us to make the greatest possible impact, for some of the most neglected animals in the world.

Any assistance you’d be happy to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Matt Coker and Shane Fox
