Help Jackie Help Children
Organized by: Conn Buckley
Jackie Kersten's main passion in life is to use her skills as an optician to help those in need. She already serves as an optician and a coordinator for the free eye clinic at the Lighthouse Mission where, most Thursdays, she gives her time to assist low-income people throughout Whatcom County get proper optical fittings for free. She also served as an optician on a Paz Salud medical mission to El Salvador last year in order to bring sight to those in need there.
Recently, Jackie was offered the opportunity to serve as an optician in a clinic that assists impoverished children in Jamaica through Direct Abundance, a charitable Canadian non-profit. She, of course, jumped on the opportunity, and was willing to invest $1,500 of her own money to make this happen. In the last week she came on her last last payment, and we found that after her final investment we would not have enough to cover the trip and manage our home expenses as well as her incidentals for the trip.
We have made it this far on our own, and are hoping that Bellingham as a community can pitch in to get her through the home stretch. If each of you could give a few dollars, it will be easy to meet the meager goal, and will mean a lot to the over 400 children and 40 adults which will be served by her presence.
A pair of glasses can mean the difference of a job to a struggling family, and an education for a child. It can mean a new quality of life that we take for granted here, but which can be hard to attain in places without available medical services. It means a lot to Jackie to provide this, and your help will mean a lot to her. Please do what you can, and also share this fundraiser through your social media. Together we can make this trip a meaningful one.
