Jennifer needs help raising money for a handicap accessible van to help her achieve the independence she deserves.
Jennifer is a 29, year old woman who lives in a rural part of Virginia with her fiancé. She has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, often referred to as SMA. SMA is a group of genetic disorders that cause muscle damage and weakness which can become progressively worse with time.
Jennifer has the most severe form of SMA called Type One, which is characterized by an early onset in which symptoms begin before the age of six months. People in this category never obtain the strength to sit independently, crawl, or walk. They are almost always on a ventilator, and the greatest threat to their lives are respiratory issues caused by the inability to breathe deeply, cough, or clear secretions.
Jennifer has been in a wheelchair most of her life and needs a handicap accessible vehicle for her transportation needs, but living on disability she simply cannot afford one. Because of her illness she doesn’t have the muscle tone required to sit upright in a regular car seat. The area she lives in has very limited handicap transportation.
Jennifer cannot afford to buy a van for herself so I have volunteered to help organize various fund raisers to help her do just that. Any and all help is highly appreciated.
So who am I? To avoid confusion I should mention that my name is Jenn, and Jennifer is the sister I never had. We don't share any DNA but we've claimed each other and that's good enough.
We're also very interested to hear about grants and other programs, so if you are aware of any send us some info!
