THE STORY:

Please help me to help the gentle, caring, and peaceful people of the beautiful but devastated land of Nepal. My medical mission to Nepal in 2010 was a life-changing experience and I cannot stand by idly and hope that someone else will do the job that I must do.
My intent is not to go there immediately, but within the next few months, because, if I go now, I will be in the way of the emergency workers who are doing their jobs during this critical time. Also, the single runway at the airport in Kathmandu is overburdened with flights that are bringing much-needed equipment, medicines, and food to a nation whose infrastructure has been severely damaged. Many roads are impassible, so the more remote areas will not get assistance until later. As with the last time that I went to Nepal, I cannot go immediately; I will need a visa for India stamped in my passport because I will have to stay in India overnight before getting the morning flight to Kathmandu. I will see if I can get the visa without first having made firm flight arrangements.
I have emailed the Nepali embassy in Washington as well as The Mountain Fund to offer my help. The Mountain Fund (www.mountainfund.org) organized my first trip there so we could take medical care and supplies to remote villages in the Himalayas. I prefer to work with them again because of our past successful efforts.
Seeing the ruined homes and temples brings to mind the shock of seeing the collapsed World Trade Center except that the damage in Nepal is spread more widely. Temples that I visited and photographed, such as those in Durbar Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site, have been reduced to rubble after standing for hundreds of years. They are irreplaceable as are the thousands of lives that were lost.
To thank the people who make a donation toward helping me, I will repay their kindness and generosity by offering prints of my photography. Each donor can select an image from my website (www.kenharveyphotography.com) or wait for an image from the trip that I am planning. For example, a donor of $25 will get an 8x10 print. A donor of $100 will get a 16 x 20 (outside dimension) mounted and matted 10 x 15 photograph.
