THE STORY:

SOUTHERN COUNTIES RESCUE wrote -

Balthazar, also known as "Superman without his Cape" is a kitten who took a flying leap in play and ended up with a very damaged knee.

While playing with other kittens his foster noticed he was limping but didn't think it was too serious, maybe a sprain, so we gave him "bed" cage rest. After a few days of no improvement we took him to the vet for x-rays only to find out he has an injured knee and needs knee surgery within the month. The surgeon assures us that he will regain full use of his leg after the surgery. Apparently, this is a rather common issue in pets, although he did say they usually see it in dogs, not cats. Leave it to us to rescue a kitten who thought he could fly!!

The surgery is going to cost $3000 plus follow-up x-rays and checkups and 6 to 8 weeks of "bed" cage rest.

One of our volunteers has taken out a Care Credit Card Loan to cover the cost of the surgery, only because we don't want to put this off any longer than we have to. We are looking at a 6 to 8 week recovery time for him and the sooner we get started, the sooner he can run and play again with his buddies. Balthazar is a very high energy Bengal mix, so this is going to be hard on him, especially once he starts feeling better.

The rescue has no "emergency" funds right now. Last month we took on a project of trapping, fixing and rehoming over 40 cats left behind in a colony of cats and kittens in a very poor neighborhood. Though the years we have helped fix and take kittens from this rescuer. While out walking a few weeks ago, the caregiver suffered a fatal heart attack. We have been spending several nights a week feeding or trapping these cats and kittens, having them spayed/neutered and either keeping them to be adopted, or releasing them into other managed feral colonies where they will continue to be fed and are safe. All of this costs money, and we don't have a lot! Our adoption fees barely cover our expenses for a healthy cat, and we very rarely have "healthy" cats that come into our rescue, since we take from the streets and shelters.

Again, we need the help of our animal loving community to pay his bills. If we can find even 60 people that can donate $50 each, or 30 that can donate $100, this will cover the initial surgery and we will cover the rest.

Please can you help? ...and if not the $100 or $50, even $10 or $5 will help towards the bills, every dollar adds up.
