Help me buy $1500 in kids books for $750 for Children's Home
Organized by: Joel Sotelo
UPDATE: I'll be tracking any and all progress on this here blog:
I have over $750 in trade credit at a local book store chain that I would like to donate to the Sacramento Children's Home. The way it works though, is that for any book I buy, I have to pay half in trade credit and half in cash. Unfortunately, I don't have $750 lying around and I'm afraid that the owner of the book chain is getting on in years and looking to retire.
If I can raise the $750 in cash, I will use it, along with my trade credit, to purchase $1500 worth of children's and young adult books and donate all of it to the Sacramento Children's home.
In many ways, reading changed my whole outlook as a kid, and in this whirling, whizzing world we live in, I think teaching a kid to not only read, but to ENJOY reading is like giving them a lifelong gift, especially when those children are underprivileged and don't have access to all the gadgets and gizmos that most of us take for granted.
Reading also encourages independent and critical thinking - two skills that are in short supply these days. We could use more people who have these skills, couldn't we? Talk about win/win!
I pledge to you that my intent here is not to simply buy 500 copies of 'Goodnight Moon' and be done with it, but to seek out as many good and wonderful books as I can find. There are at least three stores worth of books at my disposal, and the pickin's are pretty lush. I can't help thinking about that one kid who comes across a copy of 'The Phantom Tollbooth' or 'Call of the Wild' and decides to give it a try, not realizing their whole world is about to change.
If you feel the same way that I do about these things, I hope you will share your passion and help me fulfill this opportunity. Also, in addition to your donation, if you would like to name a few books that meant something particularly special to you as a kid, I will do my level best to find them and include them in the donation.
Also, not to get ahead of myself, but if I am lucky to raise more than $750, any extra funds will be used to simply buy even more books. The Sacramento children's home is taking care of a lot of kids these days.
I've decided that I really want to spend as much of the last half of my life giving back wherever I can, and this is something that just means a great deal to me. Please help me make it happen!
