I am trying to raise money for the Bellevue Hospital chapter of Reach Out and Read over the next 3 months. This organization is dedicated to helping kids enjoy reading and, more importantly, exposing parents on how to foster reading habits in their children. For every $10 donated, I will try and do 100 push ups and run a couple of miles. If I reach my goal that means I will have done 15000 push ups and run 300 miles. This also ensures I will have done something other than eat Ho-Hos. Please learn more about the organization below and please donate.
Reach Out and Read prepares America's youngest children to succeed in school by partnering with doctors to prescribe books and encourage families to read together.
The Reach Out and Read Model
Doctors, nurse practitioners, and other medical professionals incorporate Reach Out and Read's evidence-based, three-part model into regular pediatric checkups:
In pediatric exam rooms, trained doctors and nurses speak with parents about the importance of reading aloud.
At each regular checkup from 6 months through 5 years of age, the child receives a new book to take home.
Parents become more engaged and read to their children more often.
The program serves more than 4 million children and their families across the nation, with a special emphasis on serving those in low-income communities. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills, better prepared to achieve their potential in school and beyond.
Reach Out and Read provides books for children in more than 14 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish
This organization has been endorsed by prominent organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics. One particular setting where this program took place was Bellevue Hospital in New York City. Unfortunately, after Hurricane Sandy, the hospital suffered significant damage, particularly in the basement where the entire book inventory for the program was destroyed by 12 feet of water (I heard about this on PBS - see link below). I sent an email to the hospital's program spokesperson about donating books, but it seems that they prefer money for quite reasonable reasons including being able to purchase books at a much cheaper wholesale rate.
