Help Me Support Second Sense

BENEFITING: Second Sense

THE STORY:

As a member of the Board of Directors at Second Sense, I would like to share with you the great work this dynamic organization does for people with vision loss. What makes Second Sense different is our focus on our clients rather than on their disability, helping them move beyond vision loss.

Vision loss is about more than just loss of sight. It is about loss of identity, independence, mobility, confidence and control over their lives. Vision loss is also, often, a hidden disability. One in six seniors will lose their vision, due macular degeneration -- a condition that has no outward signs and is often accepted as part of aging.

Dee is one example. Just months after she lost her husband to cancer, she lost her vision to macular degeneration. She can still see blurry images, but she can't make out her grandchildren's faces. She can get around her house, but a trip to the mailbox can be fraught with hazards.

Like most seniors, Dee's eye doctor did not tell her about any resources. He just told her she was going blind, there was nothing that could be done and left the room.

This is where Second Sense steps in. The staff goes out to community sites – sites where seniors already go, like libraries, senior centers and assisted living facilities. They tell the seniors about all the tools and training that can change their lives – giving back the independence, the dignity and the enjoyment that they expected in their retirement.

Second Sense offers a variety of creative programs to meet a wide range of interests for adults of all ages. From simple, hands-on classes to improve handwriting to creative cooking classes to in-depth computer training, our staff works individually with each client to ensure their needs are met.

Dee learned about Second Sense at the Des Plaines Public Library. She attended training classes at Second Sense and received individual training in her home town. In a letter she sent to the Executive Director, she said "I am forever grateful to Second Sense for all they have given me. I can live out the rest of my life and not just sit home alone."

Thank you so much for joining me in making a gift to Second Sense this holiday season. I so appreciate your generosity and support.
