***Update, 3/14/2015: Thursday night, 3/12, we lost a dear, sweet, loving, kind, and fierce woman. Donations will continue to go to Mickey's husband and children to help cover the many life saving and life extending chemo therapies and surgeries that Mickey underwent over the last three years. These procedures provided her with many more days with her devoted and loving family than she ever could have had otherwise. Thank you all for your amazing love and support through an incredibly difficult time. Your well wishes brightened Mickey's face during the darkest times.***
Hi, my name is Kira (I'm the furry one on the right), and this is my mom, Mickey. If you are reading this, you have probably already figured out that we need your help. She is battling cancer, and just survived another life threatening surgery, meant to get the cancer out of her body.
Mickey is an amazing wife, mom, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, cousin, aunt, niece, and all around great person. She survived 9/11, and not long after, she and my dad, (her high school sweetheart), agreed that she would leave work as a high powered executive so she could home school their kids (my big brother and sister). They knew this would mean that they would have to live on much less, but they also knew that was okay, because they both felt that the most important thing she could do for her kids was to give them her time, attention, and the best education she possibly could. By schooling them at home, she got to be their full time teacher, as well as their mom. The years passed, and all the while, she nurtured her kids' unique talents, devoting all of her time to their hobbies and skills, along the way helping to develop my sister into a stellar soccer player, who hopes to, one day soon, play soccer in college.
Four years ago, my mom came down with a case of shingles, paralyzing half her face and making it difficult for her to speak, or even want to be out of the house. Just as she was recovering from the pain of the disease, and developing an acceptance of her new reality, she was diagnosed with a rare form of sarcoma (read: scary cancer). This was around the time that I joined the family. Every year since, surgeons cut out the cancerous tumors, along with more of her body, and every few months it comes back, more aggressive than before. Three years, and multiple scarring and painful surgeries later, the doctors have tentatively stated once again that they think they got it all, though only time will tell.
Multiple rounds of chemo and radiation have barely helped, and have left her debilitated in the process. Prognosis after this most recent surgery in February 2015 is good, though due to this cancer's behavior, my mom still has a long fight and recovery ahead. But she is not giving up, even though her kids are thinking about colleges, and the family is buried under a mountain of medical debt. Our family loves to get outdoors, and go hiking and exploring new places. I love to go with them hiking, but we haven't been able to because mom's cancer keeps recurring. Her goal though is to heal, recover her energy, and go hike a mountain very soon!
Insurance will only partially cover her mounting medical expenses, currently at over $300,000. She needs our support to ensure that financial constraints will never limit the quality of care and rehab that Mickey, my mom, receives. Our family has put everything on hold to help her through this period, and will go wherever, and do whatever, is best for her, but all of this adds to the collective financial strain.
She is physically and emotionally scarred from her experience, but remains cheerful, inspiring her doctors, nurses, and physical and occupational therapists. With me and the rest of our family loyally steadfast by her side, we believe that somewhere out there is a saving grace. Please help my family pay for her medical treatments. If you can't give a lot, please just give $36.00, double the symbolic number for "life", because we want to give her a second chance at life! Your donation will do more than help save a life, it will help all of us to keep her smiling. Thank you! ♥ Kira
One last thing, I want to send a HUGE thank you to the entire crowdrise team for everything that they do. You are all amazing and have a special place in our hearts. Puppy hugs all around.
