THE STORY:

I am currently serving a term of service with AmeriCorps through the Public Allies Apprenticeship program, a leadership program that places young professionals to do capacity building in nonprofit organizations. I have been selected as a finalist for the Pegasus Award for Relentless Innovation and Professional Courage in Education through the Collaborative for Perpetual Innovation, and have been invited to participate in their conference this July in Portland, Maine. I was nominated for this opportunity by my placement organization supervisor, Rather Stanton, Co-Founder of my placement organization Legal Prep Charter Academy, and by the Assistant Director of Public Allies Chicago, Cory Muldoon. Cory saw this opportunity and recognized my work with youth as innovative and courageous, and was gracious enough to submit me for consideration. I am passionate about young people, and I believe in the power of the arts to unlock untapped potential in youth, and that the arts can offer emotional and concrete tools for building the world we want to see and live in. All of my work with youth is based on this belief, and my practices are grounded in theatrical and liberatory frameworks. I use theatre and interactive tools and techniques to help students create and produce works, to help them tell their own stories, and I use such tools in other work with youth as well, such as leading Students Government and Tutoring programs at Legal Prep. I believe firmly in making youth stakeholders in their educational process, and these are just some of the ways in which I work toward that end. I am extremely honored to have been nominated and considered for the Pegasus award, and to have made it this far as a finalist. As a finalist, my conference fee has been paid for via scholarship. The remaining balance for airfare, transportation, lodging and food is a little under $1200. As a current AmeriCorps service member, I am serving as a volunteer and do not currently earn enough to be able to support this trip myself, which is why I am seeking your assistance. I would be grateful for any contributions that you can offer towards this goal so that I may take advantage the opportunity that two leaders who I respect and look up to have helped to provide, and to be able to learn and grow by gaining tools to re-imagine the education system in American classrooms from the members of the conference to better serve our students and children. The Collaboration for Perpetual Innovation is a research, development, and training resource, recognized for promoting innovative practices and energized learning environments. As a leader in the field, CPI's mission is to dramatically improve outcomes for students at risk through transformational professional development and direct student programming in schools and youth serving organizations. Thank you for your consideration, and I welcome your support in any way. Sincerely, Quenna
