In the summer of 2013, I am hoping to volunteer for six weeks at a grassroots non-profit in Nairobi, Kenya teaching english in a local school. While the organization has no additional fees, airfare is quite expensive. Along with the price of renting a shared apartment, I would really like to make a donation/bring supplies (clothing and school supplies) to help the children in the slum I will be teaching at. The organization I will be volunteering with is Volunteer4Free Kenya (http://volunteer4freekenya.kbo.co.ke/home).
I am currently an Education major at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I started volunteering while I was in high school, when I went on a Spanish trip to an orphanage in Guatemala. The children changed my life forever, and I have visited seven times in total. While I love visiting the orphanage, I really want to try something new and go out of my comfort zone. I have always been fascinated by Africa, and when I found this organization I knew it was something I wanted to do. After gradutating, I hope to volunteer abroad teaching for as long as I can (until I need to start paying back my school loans).
PLEASE know that I daydream about this every single day, and will do everything in my power to be as affective as I can be while there and not waste your money!
