About our Back to School BBQs
The Back to School BBQs are a fun way to support the Helps Education Fund and enjoy good food with your friends! Throughout the summer, a small number of dedicated Helps Education Fund supporters will agree to host their own Back to School Barbecue as small-scale fundraisers for the Helps Education Fund. Hosts pick their own dates, invite their own friends, and then help to raise funds to support our launch the Helps Education Fund’s newest program, Project SPARK (Supporting Parental Activities for Reading with Kids).

How will the money be used? 100% of the money raised at the BBQs will be dedicated to launching Project SPARK. Project SPARK empowers families to effectively improve their children’s literacy skills with fun, research-supported, and easy-to-use activities that can be used in the comfort of their own homes. Among other benefits, SPARK will offer an easy to navigate website of free resources, activities, videos, and information. The activities are designed for children from birth to 6th grade because this is the critical time that children need to develop strong reading skills. When parents use research-based early reading activities in the home, students’ reading skills meaningfully improve. These skills are vital for students’ success throughout school and into their working lives as adults. There are many other features of Project SPARK, including live professional development opportunities for families, a non-internet manual of activities and videos, as well as unique and easy to use methods for fostering positive communication between parents and teachers. Therefore, Project SPARK is also designed with schools and teachers in mind.
