BENEFITING: CAMP CARE INC
EVENT DATE: Jun 21, 2013
Every year since 2007 I spend a week and a half of June in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina playing music for the children at CampCARE. It’s one of the most thrilling and important weeks of the entire year for me. The children are here because either they or a sibling has or has had cancer. Through money raised from various events throughout the year the camp provides a totally free camp experience for nearly 200 campers each year! They estimate the cost of sending each child to camp to be around $500 to $600 - yep, that’s a lot of money. Now the cost of bringing me to camp each year is no small chunk of change - airfare, room and board, meals, etc really add up. All of this is paid for by the camp to ensure that I’m there every year leading cheers, singing silly camp songs, organizing a talent show, giving music lessons and just being an integral part of the whole camp experience. The camp has even given me a nickname, “Hot Rod”. I’m not quite sure how I got it. The first day of camp they just started calling me that and since then it’s stuck.
My hope is that this fundraiser can help offset or completely cover the costs associated with bringing me to camp each year. Remember, every $500 raised basically means that we have the resources to send another child to camp! For more on CampCAREcheck out their website www.campcare.org.
The philosophy of CampCAREfrom the beginning has been that a child with cancer is first of all, a child. A child with cancer (like all children) needs laughter, friends and fresh air. These are the very things CampCARE can provide. CampCARE is a non-profit 501C(3) organization which services both Presbyterian Hospital and Levine's Children's Hospital and relies entirely on donations. Please check with your employer to see if they have a matching funds program. CampCARE is committed to providing a camp and other year round activities for children ages 3-17, who have or have had cancer and their families in the Charlotte-Metrolina area.
