THE STORY:

Hey Everybody! For those of you who don't know, my name is Jacob Fullerton, and I am studying international business at Mississippi State University. Since I have been in school I have worked two part-time jobs simultaneously in order to cover my expenses, but I would be lying if I told you that I don't sometimes worry about having enough money for food, gas, and other school related expenses to carry me to my next paycheck. Fortunately, I have the two most wonderful parents a guy could ask for, and they have always been there to swoop in and help me out on the occasions when I have come up short, but not everyone is so lucky.

Please don't misunderstand me: I am NOT trying to say that my measly first world problems in any way allow me to relate to the very real problems of the rest of the world. I am fully aware of how lucky I am to have the opportunity to attend school, have an apartment all to myself, and have two parents that are willing and able to help me out, and I am more than willing to work so that I can have these opportunities. My life is kingly compared to the vast majority of people on this planet, and that is exactly my point. People deserve food and clothes and healthcare and a warm place to lay their heads at night simply because they are people. It is unfortunate that not everybody has access to the security that comes with all of these things because in our world today there are enough resources to for everyone to share.

I want to help put an end to disparity so that's exactly what I'm going to do. The prospect of being able to not only give back, but to actually enable people and communities to provide sustainable income for themselves is truly exciting for me, and this is exactly why I am drawn to a career in development. I have a wonderful opportunity to begin my dream career this summer with the South Africa Growth Institute in Cape Town, South Africa where I've been offered an internship. I will be working with non-profits in the development sector through this firm. In the coming weeks, I'll have more details about the specific work/projects I'll be working on. So, stay tuned for more updates!
