Not so long ago, 26-year old Shivaranjani was pursuing a busy career working as an assistant professor at Loyola College of Engineering and Technology in Chennai. Wedding bells came along in June 2014 and she married her boyfriend Arun Antony Arokia Doss, who was also working as a professor in the same college. A year later, the couple were blessed with the joy of their lives, a little boy who they named Abel. In order to support the young family, both of them took bold but difficult career decisions. Shivaranjani quit her job to care for the baby whereas Arun accepted a job offer in China in pursuit of a better career. A few months later, in September 2015, Shivaranjani started experiencing health issues ranging from fever to headaches to eyesight problems. Doctors at Shankara Nethralaya referred them to Apollo Hospitals. After a number of tests, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a type of blood cancer. Apollo provided them an estimate of INR 1,30,00,000 (1.3 crores) for treatment. Since they could not afford such a huge medical expense, they sought second opinion from doctors at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore through some personal contacts. Meanwhile, upon hearing the news, Arun quit his job in China and returned back to India as he could not get his company to grant him a long leave. At CMC, doctors confirmed the diagnosis and informed them that she required Hyper CVAD chemotherapy followed by blood stem cell transplant. The total cost of the treatment (6 cycles of chemo & stem cell transplant) was estimated at INR 35,00,000 (35 lakhs). As of Jan 6, Shivaranjani has undergone 2 cycles of chemotherapy and she is responding well to the treatment. After some struggle, they have now located a matching stem cell donor for her transplant. The transplant is scheduled for some time during the second week of February. Arun has been able to raise 15 lakhs by digging into their savings, selling property, applying loans and with the generous support of immediate friends. He hopes to raise another 5 lakhs through other sources in the next few weeks. That still leaves them about 15-16 lakhs (~ $25000) short of the total treatment costs. Since both of them are without jobs, they are on their own without any insurance cover. We appeal to everyone reading this message to consider donating whatever you can to support the treatment. No amount is small and every penny is golden. Even a dollar or two would go a long way in helping a 10 month old boy get his mom back. Also, please share this message with your friends and family, on Facebook, Twitter and other channels. Someone, in some corner of the world, might be able to relate closely to this situation and offer to help. Thank you! Tip: Try to skip one restaurant meal and eat at home instead. Donate the savings here. Shivaranjani’s Facebook profile – Arun Antony’s phone number – +91-9600175706 Note: The site accepts donations in US dollars. People in India can choose to donate the equivalent USD of their rupee contribution ($1 ~ INR 65). @
