BENEFITING: MASSACHUSETTS POETRY OUTREACH PROJECT
EVENT DATE: Apr 19, 2014
Hello! My name is Emily and I am a recent college graduate with a degree in English Literature who is running The Boston Athletic Association's 5K on April 19, 2014. I am running for a cause I am very passionate about: The Massachusetts Poetry Outreach Project (a.k.a. Mass Poetry), a non-profit that connect poets and poetry to the public of Massachusetts. This organization has a strong commitment to education, and the annual Student Day of Poetry is a day-long poetry field trip for students in Massachusetts. This event offers a performance and creative writing workshop for teens by celebrated national and local poets, followed by a student open mike. Mass Poetry also brings renowned poets to the area and hosts a number of poetry readings, with the highlight being the annual Massachusetts Poetry Festival. This year's poetry festival in Salem, MA will feature respected and award-winning poets such as David Ferry, Ilya Kaminsky, and Philip Levine who was the 18th U.S. Poet Laureate (2011–2012).
Your donation helps to pay for the costs of the Massachusetts Poetry Festival- especially the stipends for all the poets who read, the workshop leaders, and the costs of publicity. It also helps to pay the stipends to poets to take their poetry to schools, senior centers, prisons, and communities and to support workshops for teachers to assist in weaving more poetry into Massachusetts classrooms.
You can learn more about the organization by visiting their website at masspoetry.org
Every little bit you give helps to bring poetry to the public of Massachusetts! I hope you will join me in supporting The Massachusetts Poetry Outreach Project.
