EVENT DATE Aug 25, 2014
Twenty-three years ago, with a 2 month old newborn, my sister and her then husband were the glue that held my family together as I suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury at a very high financial and emotional toll for them. Their support during such a transformative time in my life has shaped the person, son, husband, father and friend that I have become many years later.
In June, Teri was diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled for surgery. Two days before surgery, a mass was found on the other breast and she underwent a double mastectomy. Follow up tests showed that the cancer had also infiltrated some lymph nodes and surrounding tissue which would require chemotherapy and radiation.
My original purpose for fundraising was to ease the financial and logistical burden that the 80 mile round trip for each treatment was going to be.
This burden became greater when on August 5th, her companion of the last 11 years, Dennis, affectionately known as Cricket, was tragically killed in an accident. Cricket had been extremely supportive and helpful in caring for Teri post operatively and transporting her to and from all appointments.
My beloved Virginia communities answered the call to help raise funds for me when I suffered my spinal cord injury those 23 years ago. I have never forgotten that support and live my life based on that same spirit to give back to others in need.
It is in her time of need that I would like to give back to my sister the love, support and assistance that she was able to provide me in my time of need.
In return for the generosity, Noah and I will begin our own challenge. We will ride the number of miles it will take Teri to travel to and from the hospital for each of her chemo treatments. We will ride on the Farmington Rail Trail as many times as we need to in order to match Teri's mileage. Our challenge begins the same day her treatments begin, August 25th.
I realize that I have set a lofty goal, so I respectfully ask for your support, thoughts, and prayers as we help Teri knockout cancer!
