BENEFITING: KINGS COUNTY TENNIS LEAGUE
As most of you know, I'm proud to be a part of Kings County Tennis League. From May to October we set up make shift courts in public housing developments in Bed-Stuy, and teach the kids that live there to play tennis. Every Saturday afternoon I'm a volunteer, and I'm also honored to serve as vice president for this incredible organization.
The background: In 2010, KCTL opened it's first site at Marcy Houses (where Jay Z grew up) with a handful of bored kids and skeptical parents. Tennis, in case you were wondering, is not something you normally see in public housing. We'll never know if it was the enthusiasm of the volunteers, or the curiosity of the kids, but something amazing happened. Kids came back with siblings and friends....a lot of kids! They came back on time, ready to play, and excited to be learning something new. Fast forward 5 years and we now have a tennis program that operates at 5 sites: Marcy Houses,Tompkins Houses, Sumner Houses, Lafayette Gardens and Jackie Robinson Park. Small acorns as they say.....
Today, KCTL has around 200 kids and over 100 volunteers from all walks of life. As an organization we seek creative ways to fulfill our mission, and we do amazing things on a teeny tiny budget. We receive some funding from the US Tennis Association, and few donations from generous organizations and foundations, but our main source of funding is from individuals like you. The organization continues to grow, and to realize our ambitions we need your help. We really really want to make this program a year round opportunity for the kids we serve. To do this, we need space, and as you all know, space in New York is like the Holy Grail....the Holy Grail with a big fat price tag. Please help us to make this happen for our students by considering making a contribution. I can't say enough how unique and special this organization is and how much I LOVE being involved.
Contributions of $100 or more will get a thank you in the form of a KCTL team T-shirt.
