Ruth is from the West Pokot region of Northwestern Kenya, close to the Ugandan border. Her older sister was married at 15, and Ruth did everything she could do avoid the FGM and early marriage that her parents were forcing upon her - she was able to find solace with her uncle.
Her personal experience and awareness of the consequences of FGM and early marriages has been an inspiration for her to help educate other Kenyan girls about their rights as women and Kenyan citizens. She is dedicated to spreading that awareness “because many Kenyans have been denied of their rights especially women.” She started this process as her class prefect before coming to Daraja.
Ruth has very clear goals for making a difference in her community - “I want to be a role model to my community by studying hard to excel in my goals... I will be able to teach my community good development and not to depend only on drugs and bad motives like FGM which may result in early marriage.” Ruth is also a singer, and at her primary school created a singing group called “Peace Group Warriors.”
