BENEFITING: Save the Children
As we are all acutely aware, Nepal has been devastated by the recent 7.8 earthquake. 35 districts in Nepal have been impacted, and the earthquake has also destroyed numerous villages in different parts of the country. Communities in rural areas have been severely affected, and aid is taking longer for these communities due to difficult terrain, landslides, and lack of resources. The accounted death toll is now over 6000, with a large number missing, and, the death toll is expected to rise.
The Office of Student Affairs and our Student Council have been working closely with HGSE Ed.M. student Sujit Thapa, who is from Nepal, and who has been communicating with his home country since the tragedy. Collectively, we are launching “HGSE Supports Nepal,” a fundraising campaign for our community that will send our donations to Save The Children organization.. We have an ambitious goal of $5,000, so please consider donating so that HGSE can have a lasting effect in Nepal. Save the Children invests in childhood – every day, in times of crisis and for our future.
In reflecting on this horrible tragedy, Sujit noted, “It is sad to see a beautiful place that I grew up in with its rich cultural and architectural heritage and wonderful people turned to dust. Places I knew dearly have been turned to rubble in a few seconds. Seeing thousands of people die and more being homeless is really heartbreaking. I want to support the relief effort in a way that has the most impact, but together, we can make a difference to the people of Nepal who are counting on our help at this critical hour and in the days ahead.”
