November is National Scholarship Month and National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week.
Colorado Mammoth star forward John Grant Jr. is our champion this year for this effort. Click on John's name to view his endorsement. John invites you to join his team to help our homeless students by raising money to provide emergency financial assistance for housing, food and scholarship funds for those high school seniors who are homeless and will be graduating this coming spring.
Hide in Plain Sight, through its collaborative network of non-profits and schools, provides the necessary funding to help our homeless students have hope for their future.
In 2005 there were over 12,000 homeless students in Colorado. Over 18,000 in 2010 and more than 24,000 in 2015.
The major cause is general financial hardship which is often the case for single parent families.
This past spring we provided scholarships to Danielle, Zoe and Kyle to continue their education in college.
But there are many children from Pre-K through high school who only get their meals from school. Who have to leave their own bed and homes because of utility shut-off notices or evictions because their parent(s) are either underemployed or have lost their job altogether.
Twenty-six percent (26%) of the jobs in Douglas County pay less than $27,000 a year and the poverty level for a single parent with children is just under $21,000.
Roughly 30,000 people or 10% of our county population is either in or on the verge of being in poverty if just one thing goes wrong in their life.
This is the time of year when we can make a real difference together.. But it will take a village to help our children, so please join John Grant and Hide In Plain Sight in our fund drive to raise money to help our homeless youth.
