THE STORY:

BENEFITING: HIGH FIVES NONPROFIT FOUNDATION

EVENT DATE: SEP 21, 2014 - Philly Rock N Roll Half Marathon

HIGH FIVE MY RUN!

That is, please choose to contribute to my pledge to raise money for the High Fives Foundation as I run the Philly Rock N Roll Half Marathon.

‪High Fives is a national 501.c.3 non-profit organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for athletes who have suffered a life-altering injury while pursuing their dream in the winter action sports community. It was formed as a way to "pay-it-forward" by the founder from his own recovery to help injured athletes.

I couldn't be more stoked and honored for my chance to pay it forward with this fundraising project. Everything about High Fives -- the athletes they serve and their dedicated mission -- has spurred me to train harder and fundraise bigger. In honor of High Fives' relentless energy, determination, positivity, and spirit, I have set a finish time goal of 1:35, which would be a new personal best.

Their community deserves all the support I can give it. Learn more about their organization at at http://www.HighFivesFoundation.org. Check out the video and some pictures of their athletes (at left).

Please contribute any amount to my pledge that you can. I value this project immensely. It is deeply and personally meaningful, and I thank you for your generous support.

IF I COULD SKI THIS RACE, I WOULD

Any day on my skis is when I’m happiest. I know this looking back over my endless skiing memories filled with joy and passion. It’s a passion I enjoy in any conditions on any mountain. It’s a passion I love to share with friends, family, or complete strangers. This fundraising effort is a way for me to honor that passion I know lives in High Fives, their athletes and their mission.

ACCIDENTS DON’T DISCRIMINATE

I’m lucky to enjoy everyday I spend on the sticks, and I realize that those days are not a given. Far too many snow sport-lovers have been stripped of their passion by accidents completely out of their control. Their paths to recovery may be very long… so why not ski it? That's where High Fives comes in, to facilitate those recovery goals and bring athletes back to the sports they love.

WORDS FROM ROY TUSCANY, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR | HIGH FIVES FOUNDATION

“On April 29, 2006 I suffered a devastating spinal cord injury while training in Mammoth Mountain, CA, rendering my lower body paralyzed immediately after the accident. After having high hopes of becoming a world class professional skier, I then had to relearn everything in my life from the ground up. A truly life-altering experience, I eventually began making great progress. With the help of strong personalities, positivity, and high fives all around me, I stepped into skis and loaded the lift at Sugar Bowl for the first time in March of 2008. The encouragement and positivity I received during my recovery inspired me to start a foundation to help others with similar experiences.

“We have not only grown at a rate that exceeded all expectations, but have also successfully raised funds, secured alternative treatments and aided in the recovery of over 59 athletes. It is a dream come true to help these people and many more. With that in mind it is the mission of High Fives to continue to grow and become a nation-wide organization that effectively acts as an umbrella for those that participate (and get hurt) in the sports we love so dearly."
