High Flow respiratory support for children in Paraguay
Organized by: Alfredo Caceres
Paraguay is a small and thriving country in the heart of South America, and like many others in the region, she has many sons around the world thinking of ways to give back. As one of them, and along with my colleagues, I feel honored and privileged to have the opportunity to raise money for a cause that involves the care of children with medical needs. Although we would love to, we are not trying to fix the world, but rather help improve (with your help) a very specific problem through a very specific and achievable intervention.
We have created this fundraising site to raise money in order to buy medical equipment called “High-flow oxygen therapy” to help in the treatment of children with severe respiratory illness. Every year there are hundreds of cases of respiratory diseases in the pediatric population that require hospital admission. In Paraguay, limited resources negatively impact the outcome of these patients. High-flow is an easy-to-administer medical therapy that could be of universal use in the country with appropriate training and equipment.
The treatment with High-flow nasal cannula and oxygen, (like the system set-up in the picture from Fisher & Paykel) involves the delivery of heated and humidified oxygen via special cannulas made to support the flow and at the same time fit comfortably on pediatric patients. It has been reported to decrease the rate of intubation in children, and are generally more tolerated and produce less nasal trauma than other devices. By introducing High-flow therapy, we hope to help with the care of patients from premature babies to adolescents.
We believe this technology could really make a difference in an area where more sophisticated and complex therapy is of limited access, and are committed to make every effort needed to make this goal a reality. I know that it will help hundreds of pediatric patients in Paraguay and would love your support.
Funds will be used to cover the cost of equipment as well as travel expenses for healthcare personnel with the purpose of training. They will be delivered directly to a public hospital without the intervention of governmental agencies.
Thank you for your support,
Team High Flow Py
