This Sunday, Kelly Peterfriend, Tiffany Cohen, Jen Kuo, Melissa Newell and I are running in the Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5k in New York City. We are running in memory of my Cousin Louis Arena, Stephen Siller and the other firemen who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11/01.
Here’s Stephen Siller’s story:
On September 11, 2001 Firefighter Stephen Siller had completed his tour and was heading home to his wife and 5 young children. When Stephen heard on his scanner what had happened, he turned his vehicle around and raced back to his firehouse in Brooklyn to get his gear. When, for security reasons he was prohibited from entering the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, he got out of his vehicle, and, with his gear strapped to his back, he began his heroic run through the tunnel to the towers. He was last seen alive at the World Trade Center site where he and so many others gave their lives so that others might live.
For the past 13 years, tens of thousands of people from across the United States and from abroad have retraced Stephen’s footsteps from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center site. We are running under the Highlands Strong team name which exemplifies courage, strength and resiliency after tragedy.
